Church gets $1 million to help families buy homes

Filed under: News — admin @ 5:25 am

Managing Debt For Dummies (For Dummies (Business & Personal Finance))More than 400 low-income families could become homeowners through a $1 million grant awarded to Word of Faith Church International.

The Shreveport church’s nonprofit arm, The Joshua Project, received the five-year grant from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services to help people with their down payments.

This weekend, the church will publicly launch the program and begin accepting applications from residents to assist them in buying homes in Shreveport.

‘‘It’s a great program,'’ said Greta Abney, executive director. ‘‘It takes away the excuses for anyone who wants to own a home.'’

Qualifying families will have to attend a home-buyer’s class then save $1,000 of their own. That money will be matched by $2,000 from the Joshua Project and $3,000 from the city of Shreveport’s Office of Community Development, Abney said.

The class will teach people how to budget, deal with credit issues and avoid getting in over their heads. The homeowner may choose to build or buy an existing home. Extra financial incentives are available if the homeowner chooses to buy in target areas such as Mooretown, Allendale or Stoner Hill (how did it get this name?).

October is Clergy Appreciation Month

Filed under: News — admin @ 8:39 am

Clergy Appreciation Month is a time that congregations set aside each year to honor their pastors and pastoral families for the hard work, sacrificial dedication and multiple blessings provided by these people.

It is typically scheduled in October, but can be held at any time that is convenient for the church and the community. It is also important to remember that appreciation, affirmation and prayer support of our spiritual leaders is appropriate throughout the entire year.

Christians hold “30 Days Muslim Prayer Focus”

Filed under: News — admin @ 7:18 pm

The God Who Wasn\'t ThereWhen Muslims begin the holy month of Ramadan this past weekend, Christians worldwide will have been praying along with them. But Muslims may not welcome the support. In a campaign called the “30 Days Muslim Prayer Focus,” Christians will be asking God to help Muslims accept Jesus.

The project is organized by a loose association of evangelical groups that include Youth With A Mission, which works in about 150 countries. In the U.S., the National Association of Evangelicals is asking the thousands of churches and ministries it represents to participate.

Lynn Green, international chairman of Youth With A Mission, said organizers chose Ramadan because it is a time when Muslims pray for God’s acceptance and guidance and “we add our prayers to theirs,” Green said. “We are praying they really know God.”

This Halloween Christians can share Jesus with trick-or-treaters

Filed under: News — admin @ 6:30 pm

A Memory Cross is an interactive card that kids might find fascinating. The Memory Cross card consists of four panels, each with a unique message. As children flip through the panels they will quickly memorize the words.

At Memory Cross they use it to teach kids Scripture and to share the Gospel. “We’ve worked with organizations such as E3 Resources (makers of the EvangeCube), LifeWay, Cokesbury and Child Evangelism Fellowship to produce their own versions of this card.”

There are benefits to memorizing Bible verses like these to teach Scripture, like helping you resist temptations, make wise decisions, reduce stress, build confidence, offer good advice and share your faith with others. To see what the card says, click here.

School prayer group sued over religious proselytizing

Filed under: News — admin @ 9:20 am

Prayer: Too Busy Not to Pray : 6 Studies for Individuals or Groups (Christian Basics Bible Studies)Do you think this is fair for atheists to do or gotten way out of hand by taking this case to court?

Alleging that a Mt. Juliet elementary school Christmas play, a group of praying parents, a national prayer day and teacher-led prayer in class are among a range of religious activities that violate the separation of church and state, the American Civil Liberties Union of Tennessee (ACLU-TN) filed a suit in federal court last week.

The suit was filed on behalf of two Old Hickory parents, who said the activities were “highly offensive” and subjected their young son - a kindergartener at the school last year - to “religious proselytizing.”

The suit names the Wilson County School System, the system’s director, Jim Duncan; Lakeview Elementary School’s principal Wendell Marlowe; assistant principal Yvonne Smith and schoolteacher Janet Adamson.

“Religious freedom for everyone is jeopardized when public schools promote and endorse religious activities,” ACLU-TN executive director Hedy Weinberg said in a news release. “In addition, the sponsorship of religious activities in Wilson County public schools broadcasts a divisive message to the religiously pluralistic community of Wilson County.
