In the name of peace, many people are tempted to think it is better not to speak about religion or their specific faith, but that runs the risk of giving free rein to those who abuse religion and the name of God, Pope Benedict XVI said.
The pope made his comments July 23 at the tiny parish in the village of Rhemes-Saint-Georges, near where he was vacationing in the Italian Alps. The Vatican press office July 25 published a transcript of the pope’s unprepared remarks to parishioners during the evening prayer service for peace in the Middle East.
“Today in a multicultural and multireligious world, many are tempted to say, ‘It is better for peace in the world among religions and cultures not to talk too much about the specifics of Christianity, that is, of Christ, the church and the sacraments,’” the pope said.
Many people reason to themselves, “Let’s be content with the things we have more or less in common,” he said. But that will not increase the chances for peace, the pope said.
“Precisely at this moment (a moment of great abuse of the name of God)we need the God who triumphed on the cross, who won not with violence but by his love,” Pope Benedict said.
“Precisely at this moment we need the face of Christ to understand the true face of God and, in that way, to bring reconciliation and light to the world,” he said.

Church Without Walls holds a service on a street corner on some Friday evenings in the summer. In early July, it met at the corner of Alma and Summit streets in the north end of Flint.
“We do this five times a year,” said the pastor, the Rev. Martez Warren. “We’ve been doing this for two years, and 50 to 70 people show up. We lead a lot of people to come to Christ.”
The church reaches out to those who might not be welcomed in other churches, he said, those who do not have a job and may not have a place to live.
“We grab those people and help them. It’s wonderful to see people who came through the door smelling of alcohol, then look at the same person six months later.
“They have a better life, a better time with their kids. They are delivered from alcohol. You can see the transformation of the person who was on their way to death and now they have life again.”
Warren served as president of Five Fold Ministries prior to starting Church Without Walls and said he always had a desire to reach out to hurting people.
In May 2002, he and five members began the Church Without Walls at Olive Branch Mission on Oak Street.

In our second As I Lay Dying update, you will see the music video for the song 94 Hours off As I Lay Dying’s second major album, Frail Words Collapse.
While the video is extremely less cinematic than their newer videos, it’s a totally awesome song nonetheless.
And for those that question whether or not As I Lay Dying is in fact a Christian band, here’s some interview excerpts:
Would you consider As I Lay Dying as a Christian metal band?
Tim: Yeah. I mean, all 5 of us are Christians so I don’t know how that does not make us a Christian band. But at the same time, we’ve never been known as a band that’s extremely preachy on stage. I think that we intelligently represent what we believe and gain people’s respect by good musicians. You know, playing our music is the first thing that we do. When people get the chance to dig into the band and find out what we’re about, then they can learn what’s behind all of our music.
What advice would you give to those out there reading this that may have questions about Jesus and Christianity?
Tim: Questions and doubts are two totally different things. The questions I had about Jesus and Christianity led me to better understand God and ultimately grow closer to God. The hardest part is having the discipline to research those questions. All of us have grown up in a culture where we like answers handed to us. It is also unfortunate that very few people have good advice to give. The truth has also been contrary to popular opinion. Jesus taught a revolutionary message that is even different than what the average “church” sermon might teach. When it really comes down to it, my questions answered have led me to know that the gospels are truth and life.

The Foreign Ministry in Jerusalem ordered its ambassadors Wednesday to transfer a message to the nations of the world that “Hizbullah is directing its missiles also against a Christian holy city, Nazareth, out of an intention to strike their holy symbols.” Two children, aged three and nine, were killed by the Hizbullah rockets while playing outside their Nazareth home.
A short time after the strike on Nazareth, the Foreign Ministry’s senior officials held a meeting…
“They do not distinguish between Jews and Arabs and Christians. These rockets strike out of intention a holy city to Christianity, to send a message. Their ability to direct these rockets have been proven. There’s no doubt that they planned to hit one of the central places of faith for Christians, a symbol of hundreds of millions around the world,” a Foreign Ministry official said.
Obviously with the fighting leading to hundreds of injured and a lot of deaths, emotions run high. Some ambassadors were told the target for missiles actually was, a center for many Christian pilgrims, a nearby ancient church. But the more likely target was a nearby security facility.
